Hello, everyone, and welcome back to La Vida Futbol. My name is Luis Loreano. Today, we’re going to talk about the 3-4-3 formation. We’re going to discuss the strengths, weaknesses, and different variations of the 3-4-3. Let’s start by discussing the 3-4-3 with a flat 4 in the middle. In this formation, we have a flat 4 in the middle, which provides a good balance on the field and offers width with the numbers 7 and 6. However, if the numbers 2 and 3 push forward to act as attackers, the numbers 7 and 6 will need to tuck in to allow space for the number 2 and 3 to spread out. This formation can essentially become a 2-5-3 during the attack. It can be tricky in transition as it leaves a lot of space on the outsides. To counter this, the left and right backs should be ready to step back and complete a back line of 3 when building from one side. Alternatively, the number 6 can step in between the numbers 4 and 5, creating a 3-4-3 formation with the number 2 and 3 pushing higher up. The 3-4-3 with a flat 4 allows for flexible movement and can exploit the space between the lines of 4 and 3 during the attack. The advantage of having space depends on the abilities of the number 6 and 5 to move the ball forward. However, there is a disadvantage if the number 10 is positioned on the right side, as it requires them to push higher up the field. Let’s now look at the 3-4-3 with a diamond in the center. This formation differs from the flat 4 version. Here, the number 10 is positioned behind the number 9, offering support to the three strikers with through balls. The number 5 occupies the space next to the number 4, allowing the number 2 and 3 to push forward. To further support the two players, the number 6 can go between the numbers 4 and 5, creating more space for the number 8 and 10 in the middle, while the 2 and 3 push higher up. This dynamic formation requires midfielders who can exploit space and create diamonds. The number 5 acts as a connection between the defense and midfield, and can also be involved in the build-up play. However, when the numbers 2 and 3 tuck in, there is open space on the wings for opposing teams to exploit, like in a 4-4-2 formation. But if the team possessing the ball plays with a 3-4-3 diamond, they have the ability to compensate for this disadvantage. Additionally, the midfield advantage is numerically noticeable, with a 3 versus 2 situation in the center of the field. Creating attacks through the diamonds formed by the full-backs and midfielders is possible. However, losing the ball in certain situations can lead to dangerous counterattacks with a 1 versus 1 or 2 versus 1 scenario against the defense. The effectiveness of the formation relies heavily on the midfielders’ ability to meet the demands of their positions and play well together. If a clear number 10 is not available, the 3-4-3 with a flat 4 in the midfield can compensate on the wings with the numbers 8 and 7. That’s all for this video. Thank you for watching.
