June 28th, 2023. The first phase of the woodcutting expansion “Forestry: The Way of the Forester” has been released to OSRS. You may have seen dev updates and videos on some of the changes, but let’s go through all of them here in a quick and simple rundown.

There are basically three major changes that have been implemented as a result of this expansion. We’ll tackle the two simple ones first. Change one involves modifying the despawn mechanics for trees. Prior to release, trees had a chance to despawn after being cut, with each tree having a different despawn chance. Now, trees despawn on a timer, with the despawn rates listed.

Change two involves giving players an invisible boost to woodcutting when chopping at a tree with other players. For every additional person chopping at a tree you are at, you get a plus one boost to your woodcutting skill. This can stack with up to 10 additional players for a total of a plus 10 boost. These bonuses don’t apply while cutting a normal tree or while in the woodcutting guild.

The third change is much more in-depth, which is the introduction of the forestry kit. New shopkeepers have been added just south of the bank in Draynor Village and in Seers’ Village. Talking to one of the friendly foresters, you can purchase a forestry kit for 120 GP. It is a wearable cape slot item that can store all tools, resources, and gear needed for the items released in the forestry expansion.

The kit can hold a large variety of items obtained from chopping trees, combining items from the new forestry-exclusive random events, and items purchased from the forestry stores. When chopping trees with the forestry kit equipped, there’s a 1 in 4 chance to get leaves or needles from the tree. These can be used along with cooked meat to make forestry rations. Forestry rations have a 30% chance to restore 20 run energy when chopping trees with a one-handed axe.

The rate at which you get leaves can be doubled by utilizing a cicadas attachment obtained from the forestry store. There are also new random events exclusive to forestry. The rising roots event involves cutting roots that spawn, giving you nema-infused bark. The flowering tree event spawns bees and flowers, and you need to find the flower that gives you pollen and the one that needs pollen. The leprechaun event has a leprechaun appear and bank your logs. The struggling sapling event requires you to create the right combination of mulch to feed the sapling before it dies. All of these events give additional woodcutting XP and rewards.

The forestry kit also allows you to create nature’s offerings by combining ritual mulch from the forestry shop with high-tier herbs. The rewards from the forestry shop can be purchased using anema-infused bark and certain noted logs. The major rewards include the lumberjack outfit, forestry outfit (a cosmetic override for the lumberjack outfit), log basket (to store 28 additional logs), log brace (to combine the forestry kit and log basket into the forestry basket), clothes pouch (to store the lumberjack or forestry outfit in your kit), and the funky shaped log (unlocks unique transmog options when given to the woodcutting beaver pet).

Overall, this expansion provides additional goals and perks to woodcutting while maintaining the nostalgic roots of the skill. Many players may have initially been skeptical, but it adds depth and content to a long-standing skill.
