Hello and welcome back! Today, we want to continue the subject of SSDs and specifically look at two Samsung SSDs: the Samsung 990 Pro and the Samsung 980 Pro. These SSDs are from Samsung, a brand well-known for handling everything in-house, from components to distribution.

If you’re watching this video, you might be interested in upgrading your PS5, old gaming PC, or editing rig. Samsung has always had a good reputation in the world of SSDs, but it’s also worth mentioning that Gen 5 SSDs exist. Despite this, the Samsung 990 Pro and the Samsung 980 Pro are still considered good benchmarks for Gen 4 SSDs.

In this video, we will compare the stats of both drives and discuss which one is better suited for your needs. Benchmarks for both drives have already been done in separate reviews, so check the description for more information. This video is more of a buyer’s guide to help you make an informed decision.

Now, let’s talk about the prices. Surprisingly, despite the two to two and a half years of release difference between these drives, the prices are quite similar. The Samsung 980 Pro is priced at 67 pounds per terabyte for the largest available capacity of 2TB, with an additional cost for the heat sink. The Samsung 990 Pro, on the other hand, is only available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. The price per terabyte averages out at 67 pounds 75 or 69 pounds 75 with the heat sink. Overall, the prices between these two drives are very close.

However, it’s important to note that the Samsung 990 Pro offers larger capacities, while the Samsung 980 Pro offers smaller capacities, including 120GB and 128GB options. So if you’re looking for a smaller OS drive, caching drive, or scratch disk, the 980 Pro has better storage options.

In terms of hardware architecture, both drives are quite similar, as they utilize in-house SSD controllers developed by Samsung. The main difference lies in the controller and the quality of the NAND. The Samsung 990 Pro uses the Pascal controller, with higher performance, while the 980 Pro uses the LPS controller. The NAND on both drives is V-NAND from Samsung’s own production facility, but the 990 Pro uses a higher quality 176-layer 3D NAND compared to the 136-layer NAND in the 980 Pro.

When it comes to performance, the Samsung 990 Pro outperforms the 980 Pro. The 990 Pro has higher reported maximum sequential read and write speeds, as well as 4K random IOPS. The 990 Pro has an increase of 450MB/s in data transfer compared to the 980 Pro. The IOPS figures are also higher on the 990 Pro, with 1.5 million read/write
